BKS Iyengar, who passed away in August 2014 at the age of 95, was one of the first people to introduce yoga to the West: his method has made yoga accessible and relevant to people everywhere.
Iyengar yoga follows a structured approach which allows you to progress safely through the two hundred poses in a graduated sequence from basic to the more advanced. It is characterised by precision and alignment, timing in and sequencing of postures, and also the use of props.
All Iyengar Yoga teachers undergo a rigorous training programme and once qualified teachers must complete professional development training regularly in order to maintain their membership of the Iyengar Yoga Association. These high teaching standards are part of the reason Iyengar Yoga is the most widely performed method of Yoga worldwide.
